Clean, Clear Water....Pond Filters
My pond has gone green...a pond filter will stop this happening. Ponds filters
have come along way in shape and design, todays pond filters are smaller, cheaper and easier to use than ever before !
But what sort of pond filter do I need.... well small ponds only require a foam filter and really big ponds
need professionally designed and tested filters. Here at Creative Ponds we stock pond filters
for the smallest pond or water tub through to the largest ponds, whether it be a pressure filter, external filter, UVC/Bio combo filter
or just a pump prefilter - Creative Ponds can help turn your pond from green to clean in no time at all!
My pond has blanket weed... Pond filters have very little effect on blanket weed but
don't panic because there is help with a electronic weed control system your blanket weed problem will become
a thing of the past. Here at Creative Ponds we have blanket weed controllers for ponds from 5000 ltr
to 75000 ltr. My filter isn't working....... we carry spare parts for pond filters, UV globes, replacement foams,
flocor media or 'o' rings and seals
How Does A Bio Filter Work?
The principal behind biological filtration is very simple. A pond naturally creates a bacterial growth as it
establishes it's eco system. This bacterial growth hates sunlight so it grows in the darkest places in your pond - the bottom
under rocks and silt, the problem is making sure all the water in the pond goes pass the bacteria so it can remove the
nutrient from the water. How do we do this.....? the easiest and simplist way is setting up a home,
a nice big home a Bio Filter.
A Bio Filter is made so no sunlight enters and has a media that the bacteria can live on/in so all we have to do now is
pump the pond water thru the filter and all the pond water now passes by the bacteria! The bacteria is a growing living thing
that like us needs fresh air that it gets from the water so you run the filter system 24hrs a day (Pond pumps use almost no power to run)
as the pond clears the bacteria will die off from lack of food but if a heap of leaves land in the pond the bacteria will start growing in numbers.
But how does the filter kill the algae.....algae needs two things to grow 1/ Sunlight 2/ Nutrients the
bacteria eats the nutrient as the water passes by so the algae starves and dies and is collected by the foam in the Bio Filter.
A good place to see biological filtration on a grand scale is at the sewage treatment plant, next time you go pass one have a look
for something that looks like an old "hills" clothes line slowly turning with water coming from the arms above a concrete tanks about 3 or 4
ft high - yes that is a large Bio Filter at work!!
